Apples and Wine

The following was sent to me in one of those chain email forwards:

Women are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree. Most men don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they sometimes take the apples from the ground that aren’t as good, but easy. The apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, they're amazing. They just have to wait for the right man to come along, the one who is brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.

Now men... Men are like a fine wine. They begin as grapes and it's up to women to stomp the shit out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.

I know it is just a silly forward, but I wondered if there was any truth to it. (Well, the part about men being wine is absolutely true-- I was referring to the 'Women as Apples' part). Would a guy ever seriously think "This girl is too good for me" and decide not to date her based on that assumption? Even more unbelievable to me is that a guy would actually pick a girl he knew didn't measure up to his highest standards, thinking it would somehow be "easier" to date her.

Maybe it is just one of those things people say in order to avoid hurt feelings or to deny reality. For example, "True beauty is on the inside" is just something ugly people say to feel better about themselves. I'm kidding, I'm kidding! Sorry, bad joke.

I do believe true beauty is found inside of a person (have you met some of my exes? Oops, bad joke again). If you are really lucky, you find someone who is beautiful inside and out. A shiny, deep red, crisp, ripe, sweet, delicious apple at the tippy-top of the blooming tree. Perhaps those apples really are just out of reach.

I need a brave man. Or a sorta brave one with a ladder. Pre-stomped, please! I've done enough stomping in my lifetime already.

I can actually relate somewhat. I feel that I deserve an awesome woman, and in time, I will find her. However, in the meantime, I think that I have "settled for less," so to speak, in the past, out of complete fear of rejection. Basically, my own insecurities, whether they be physical or mental, prevent me from having the balls to approach women I consider "top of the tree." I think the apple tree metaphor is legit in many ways. Ultimately, people are so diverse and different on so many levels.... It is important not to simplify -- assume men are not approaching you for specific reasons -- as there are many many different reasons two people may or may not connect. Often times both parties are too insecure to approach one another, or maybe the timing is just wrong. Timing, in my opinion, is everything.
