Stir Crazy

I have been stuck indoors for many hours. Many, many hours. I will be indoors all night and all day tomorrow and all tomorrow night. I would be stuck with nothing to do until the fires cleared or until Monday, whichever came first, but I have a work trip to Michigan on Thursday morning. I will have an aerial view of San Diego on fire; it will be an incredible view, I'm sure.

I am not complaining about being stuck indoors for I am one of the lucky residents who has an indoors in which to be stuck.

I have done nothing today. Whenever I have an abundance of free time, I do nothing. I have the next hour to get to it and the next hour, so it never gets done. I am effective and efficient when I'm busy. I am sluggish and sedentary when unoccupied.

I did bake cookies yesterday. Delicious pumpkin, spiced, cake-like, fluffy cookies topped with a homemade butter cream glaze and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Yes, they are as amazing as they sound.

I hate myself for making those cookies. I sit around, all day, and do nothing but eat those cookies. Damn those cookies. Damn me.

By the time I woke up, all evacuation sites were full of volunteers and had a steady stream of supplies coming in. By the early afternoon, they were telling people to stop bringing supplies. The outpouring empathy and help from our community to the affected has been incredible. There is nothing to do now; I will have to help with clean up or donate items or money to the victims once this has settled down.

So my life today has consisted of me sitting around, cursing my good fortune, eating too many cookies, checking the news every 10 minutes, checking my email every other 10 minutes, and constantly thinking about how I hate that I am forced to stay indoors and feel helpless.

I'm going to go have another cookie.
